Grading

Coins are commonly graded according to their state of preservation. Throughout this website the following abbreviations are used:
-
VG - Very Good: A well worn coin which is damage free.
-
VF - Very Fine: A circulated coin with fairly extensive wear.
-
XF - Extra Fine: Most detail on coin is clear. Obvious signs of circulation.
-
AU - Almost
Uncirculated: A coin which has seen very limited circulation. Original mint luster should be present.
-
MS - Mint State: A coin which has never seen circulation. Mint State coins are commonly graded from MS60 (a low grade uncirculated coin exhibiting many abrasions from contact with other coins) to MS70 (a perfect coin, just as if it came off the die). In practice, most uncirculated coins grade from MS60-MS66. The value of uncirculated coins can vary dramatically according to their MS grade.
We recommend the use of independent grading services when buying or
selling most mint state coins with values over a few hundred dollars.
